Parkinson’s Patients Receive Top Care Close to Home

Parkinson’s disease affects 1.5 million Americans. Each year, 60,000 new cases are diagnosed, making the condition a major neurological issue in the U.S. Families from all backgrounds and ethnicities need help coping with the disease.

In Kentucky and southern Indiana, Parkinson’s disease patients and their families can turn to the University of Louisville’s Movement Disorder Program, a National Parkinson Foundation Center of Excellence. The program features a referral center that works to meet a patient’s clinical, psychological and lifestyle needs. Research is a key part of the program, backed by the University of Louisville.

The Movement Disorder Program was established in 2003 and is led by Dr. Irene Litvan, an endowed Parkinson’s disease research professor at the University of Louisville. The program is located in the Frazier Rehab and Neuroscience Center. This means optimal care for patients, with easy access to each phase of their treatment, from innovative diagnosis and evaluations to pharmacological and rehabilitative therapies.
