Neuropsychology

Frazier Rehab Institute's Neuropsychology Laboratory provides useful neuropsychological and developmental evaluations on individuals with mild to severe traumatic brain injury, stroke, toxic exposure, metabolic dysfunction, tumor, hemorrhage, injury from lack of oxygen, cardiopulmonary illness or neurodegenerative disorders. Comprehensive, thorough assessments assure that referral questions are addressed and differential diagnoses are accurate.

Program Goals and Benefits

  • Establish baselines for performance and measure progress over time or following treatment
  • Evaluate intelligence, academic skills, new learning capabilities, memory functioning, cognitive flexibility, executive functioning skills, planning and organizing skills, visual-motor and sensory deficits, non-verbal problem solving skills, level of effort and motivation, attention and concentration skills
  • Address safety issues and the need for support or supervision
  • Assess substance abuse, social, behavioral or personality issues
  • Assess strengths and weaknesses relative to success in work, school or independent functioning

Features

Neuropsychological evaluations have the richest and oldest scientific underpinnings of any procedure designed to assess brain-behavior relationships. These evaluations describe brain mediated human behavior better than any other single approach.

  • Evaluations describe cerebral impairment in terms of a person's abilities and limitations
  • Successfully employed, these evaluations guide the multidisciplinary treatment that will maximize recovery
  • Pre- and post-surgical evaluations are available to monitor progress and improvement
  • Expert opinions for legal or court-ordered cases

Neuropsychological evaluations are not just "testing." Tests are one component of this evaluation that takes into consideration and utilizes an individual's developmental, psychological, emotional and general adaptive history in order to understand results in the context of the individual's life history.
