Selecting a Plastic Surgeon Selecting a Qualified Plastic Surgeon is important. Ask your family, friends and family physician for a referral. Call the physician's office and ask for his or her qualifications and educational training. Inquire whether the physician is board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and if not, ask why. It is recommended that you see more than one plastic surgeon. Don't be afraid to ask how many times the surgeon has performed the procedure in which you are interested. The plastic surgeon should also have privileges at a hospital in case there are unexpected complications. Choosing to undergo plastic or reconstructive procedures is not easy. It requires an informed decision from candid consultations with a physician and expectations on your part. As in every surgical procedure, there are risks, and these risks should be discussed with your surgeon.
