Transplant Medications

During the hospital stay, the Transplant Team will be watching carefully for signs of rejection, the process by which the body's immune system reacts to the new organ. Thanks to new immunosuppressive drugs, rejection can be prevented and/or treated successfully.

After transplantation, patients are required to take medications for the rest of their lives. This includes immunosuppressants, which suppress the immune system to prevent the body from rejecting the transplanted organ. Upon discharge from the hospital, patients will be on multiple medications, some of which will be taken several times a day.
